Charmian Harris

About Charmian Harris

Born in 1953, Charmian spent her childhood in Nigeria, returning to England when she was nine to settle with her family in Cambridge.

She specialised in ceramics at the West Surrey School of Art and went on to work with Clive Bowen at Shebbear Pottery in Devon, where she met her husband, Nick Chapman. With two small children to look after, she started working in metal, using techniques that were mostly self-taught.

Charmian’s business today has been built up over four decades and now includes both her husband, Nick and her daughter, Meriel.

Ideas for designs come from the stones and metals themselves as well as museums, sketch books and the natural world.

We use simple methods to create shapes and links from sheet metal and wire; sawing, soldering, fusing and shaping with hand-held tools. Texture is created through the techniques of reticulation, paper-pressing and beating with hammers and doming-blocks.

Three-dimensional shapes are made using the process of lost-wax casting and recently we have begun adding patterns of 24 carat gold on silver using the ancient Korean technique of kuem boo.
