Biography:

I see my jewellery as small scale personal sculpture which can be worn. Each piece is unique, though often in series, a complex of materials, fine carving or gemstones, ivory or wood, combined with other precious materials, metals and stones. My intention in using figurative imagery, human and natural forms, is to provide a means to help in the wearer's creation of a sensuous, romantic private mythology, a personal voice. A necessary balance to contemporary styles of life. I prefer to make sculptural jewellery objects which can be seen and handled by the wearer - rings, pendants, bangles, rather than adornment, fashion or lifestyle jewellery. The materials I use for carving are often organic, eg. ivory, wood. I find these to be wonderful and expressive to work with. They help to carry the idea of jewellery as part of Nature. Carving on a tiny scale changes and becomes slower with age. I have a wide range of materials and techniques, and expanding my grasp of these is part of it, so I also do larger scale sculpture, stone carvings, bronzes and drawings in a balancing act for my own attempts to understand the world, but my enduring fascination is to pursue the special if unusual in jewellery. NB the ivory used is recycled.
