The Goldsmiths Company

Biography:

After a successful career working as a designer and manufacturer in precious metals, I decided at the beginning of the new millennium to return to first ambitions and concentrate on the creation of sculptural silver pieces in small editions. Inspiration for this new work has come mostly from my love and concern for the natural world. Although none of the silver items are in any way copies of animal or plant forms, they all attempt to capture a feeling for their subject using clean shapes with little or no decoration, the reflectivity of the metal providing surface complexity. After initial sketches, I prefer to develop ideas in three dimensions, modelmaking rather that drawing and only when shape and proportion are resolved do I start working in silver. The designer in me still requires that pieces are practical to own and use, while many years of hard won craft skills ensure that everything is made and finished to the highest standard. So that this approach to my work should be cost effective and not hampered by normal silversmithing restraints I have pioneered the development of arc welding for joining components. This allows for seamless construction whether using raised, formed or cast parts. Technical considerations are no longer a hindrance to creativity.
