Biography:

Joan's work is a combination of glass fused to metal and she begins with a passionate response to the material itself. She makes richly allusive objects that evoke a sense of timelessness alongside a complete contemporary relevance. In her pieces, comprised mainly of jewellery, boxes, vessels and wall installations, she strives to give shape and form to the experiences of her childhood, spent on the Atlantic shore of Donegal. At the same time she engages with the wider themes of the romance of the Celtic tradition. Joan is a founder member of the British Society of Enamellers and is a co-director of Studio Fusion Gallery, the first centre in the UK dedicated to contemporary vitreous enamel in the applied arts. It is based at the Oxo Tower in London. In addition she is a visiting lecturer at a number of prestigious institutions.
