Biography:

2010 Karina Gill’s aim as a contemporary silversmith is to demonstrate first-class craftsmanship throughout her distinctive, sculptural pieces. Fifteen years ago, Karina unearthed a deceptively simple, powerful idea, with potential for infinite evolution. Influenced by organic repetition in nature, the principals of print-making and textiles created a unique outcome: delicate yet solid, natural yet structural, simple yet curiously complex. Unashamedly more concerned with artistic form than function, the pieces explore tension between irregular, organic texture and perfectly repeating structure. Cold metal takes on natural warmth once manipulated by Karina’s folding techniques. Each piece derives from a single sheet of metal. Free-hand acid etching creates a heavily textured yet delicate surface, giving each one-off an organic quality. The material is cut, ensuring no wastage – one complete sheet of silver is used to create each piece. It’s in this transformation that the magic lies. The metal is hand-sculpted, hammered and manipulated to create a final geometric bowl, which intrigues through its apparent solidity and tactility. Karina continues to develop this concept, creating a body of work with a unique signature style.
