Biography:

From her studio in South Derbyshire, Louise Mary creates handmade silverware and jewellery using shapes inspired by nature.  "I am very passionate about the craft of silversmithing, and it is my aim to respond directly to the silver as I work with it. It is important that each silverware piece is handmade – giving each piece a truly individual, organic shape. Although they may look sculptural, all my pieces are completely functional – it is my hope that that they will be used, loved, and passed on as heirlooms of the future." Louise’s work is characterised by her unique use of the technique of fold forming to create her distinctive contemporary range of silverware. The fold created in this instinctive process strengthens a seemingly thin piece of silver, as well as referencing the plant world, in particular leaves, which inspired it. Her work has an organic, elegant feel, and every object has a purpose, from her leaf shaped bowls and spoons to coffee scoops and delicate flower vases. Integral to the pieces is the importance of design, so a small cut out or twist gives each object an added dimension. Her work has been exhibited widely in the UK and has been nominated and received many awards, the most prestigious being Runner-Up in the Thomas Lyte Modern Heritage Award in 2008. Louise also runs day courses in silversmithing, please visit her website for more information and online booking.
