Biography:

Mary Ann’s silver boxes explore the link between silver as a decorative material and the personal, commemorative, and sculptural object. She uses handwriting and images of special significance to the client to personalise objects and recently used childrens’ drawings on the exterior of a box and on a key fob. Creating individual commemorative pieces is one of her main objectives. Mary Ann uses photo etching to preserve the character of the image and applies this to both the interior and exterior of a commissioned piece. Another aspect of her work involves breaking away from the conventional idea of boxes. Distorting the box and exploring its form in perspective or questioning the convention of the lid allows her to produce boxes in the purely decorative or sculptural. Silver helps articulate these ideas because it is a material with lasting beauty and distinction.
