ADDRESS :

Unit 3.02 The Goldsmiths Centre 42 Britton Street London EC1M 5AD

Biography:

From her London studio based in the Goldsmiths’ Centre in Clerkenwell Melanie combines traditional approaches with new applications, creating sculptural jewellery that uses geometry as a tool to explore the relationship of form to the body. She specialises in a bespoke service, undertaking commissions in precious metals where the design centres around exceptional stones - exceptional either for aesthetic considerations or their emotional and personal value to the wearer or giver. Trained in Bermuda, Canada, New York and London; she holds an MA Design: Jewellery from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and is now an Associate Lecturer there. She is involved in jewellery design and manufacture through facilitating creative and professional development – projects undertaken include research, writing, editorial work, teaching, exhibition installation and curation. She has undertaken contracts with institutions and corporations as varied as Swarovski, Transitions Optical, the Victoria & Albert Museum and The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths’. She teaches jewellery on the MA Design at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. In the autumn of 2010 she undertook a two-month applied arts creative residency at Turquoise Mountain’s Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture in Kabul, Afghanistan supported by the British Council. She has continued work in South Asia consulting on a regular basis for Turquoise Mountain, working with Afghan NGO and UK charity, Future Brilliance, on a project taking jewellers and gem-cutters from Afghanistan to Jaipur, India for skills enhancement and apprenticeship style training and most recently with the Aga Khan Foundation on jewellery value chain development in the north of Pakistan. As curator of a British Council exhibition she was involved in bringing contemporary jewellery and gemstones from Afghanistan to the UK, first to London and then to Edinburgh in Scotland.
