Melissa Rigby

Designer

The Goldsmiths Company

Biography:

Melissa is an award-winning designer and goldsmith who specialises in one-off and limited edition pieces in high carat gold and silver. Inspired by the beauty and intricacy of nature, her designs reflect the natural surroundings of her rural studio, and are characterised by tactile surfaces and her use of unusual gemstones and crystals. Melissa emulates natural surface textures and patterns using hand tools and ancient techniques: hammering, precious metal fusing, granulation, keum boo and her own unique enamelling method of fusing gold with enamel that creates lustrous patterns of gold on silver. Extraordinary native metal crystals with unique lace-like formations and raw uncut gemstone crystals also feature in Melissa’s distinctive designs. Each technique and design pays homage to sources of inspiration that continue to intrigue Melissa. Her use of granulation references home grown berries, lichen on her fruit trees inspires her use of native crystal formations, shooting stars above her studio are reflected in amazing Muonionalusta meteorites and bark appears as hammer and enamel patterns. Established in London since 2002, and in a shepherd’s hut in rural Wiltshire since 2014, Melissa makes her pieces individually by hand and enjoys working closely with clients to commission. From 2009 – 2011, Melissa was Chairman of The British Society of Enamellers.
