Biography:

Silverware to me has to be aesthetically pleasing, with a sculptural visual strength.  My designs are founded on a balance of line, form and proportion, which harmonize with the detail in the tactile finished pieces. I have developed an interest in deep drawing and press forming silver and CAD to bring the traditional craft to a new level. The press can be used to make objects that would be difficult to make by hand. However, it is no substitute for traditional silversmithing techniques, which I use in combination with the new technology. The computer has revolutionised how I work. I can use the drawings that I construct on the computer to create the forms, although there are elements that have to be done by hand and eye.The inspiration, for my designs come from looking and seeing natural and manmade objects, visiting museums and archaeology sites. I am particularly interested in the growth, surfaces and textures of plants. I have also been devising a finish which hide fingerprints. This has let to the “prickly pear” and “blister” surface decoration together with the sanded textured surface and the “small ball hammer planishing” finish.
