Biography:

An important part of the process of making jewellery for me is the harvesting of materials. I prefer to collect these at source where possible - mining sapphires in New South Wales, prospecting for boulder opals in Queensland, fossiking for rose quartz and serpentine in Cornwall and, on occasion, finding wild pearls. The rough stone is then cut and polished to my own specifications. This close involvement with all aspects of the production influences the design and techniques employed in the making. Attention to small details in each stone can start the evolutionary process of the piece. The choice of companion materials then unfolds naturally. Current favourites include Tibetan fossilized coral and Nepalese lime green tourmaline from a recent journey. The gemstone specimen collection at the gallery provides a valuable reference source to show clients unfamiliar with some of the more unusual stones. Other directions have come from life drawing in Italy and time spent there studying the Medici and other Renaissance collections. Travels to visit the Zuni silversmiths in New Mexico and the Haida silver carvers of British Columbia were also strong formative influences. The workshop and gallery on Chelsea Green have provided 18 years of experience working to commission. Clients interested in the whole process are welcome to visit at various stages of production to view the progress of their commission.
