Biography:

Ruth Tomlinson is renowned for meticulously handcrafted, luxury fine jewellery and continues to grow her business at her central London studio into its 15th year. Ruth’s unusual techniques ensure that originality prevails with each new collection; by designing and making beautiful, handmade pieces her clients can rest assured that their jewellery will be truly unique. Ruth’s collections encompass four high-end precious stone and gold ranges, each with its own identity. She also specialises in creating one-off and bespoke commissions; often taking unworn and underappreciated jewellery with sentimental value and reconstructing it into a piece for the owner to treasure and wear time and time again. Ruth has been cemented by industry experts and is stocked worldwide at independent luxury boutiques. She has previously been honoured with prestigious awards such as New Designer of the Year, from the BDC and the Theo Fennell Award for Best in Jewellery Design at the Royal College of Art. Artist’s statement – ‘I am driven by my passion for the earths treasures; the magic of minutiae, tiny intricacies, small imperfections, and the individual’s search for preciousness. I seek out the unconventional beauty within and this fuels my creativity, whether in the rarity of material or a curiosity in nature. My inspiration is drawn from both the mysteries of historical jewels and the ephemerality of natures life cycles from birth to decay. My work is often a response to my immediate environment, whether a fleeting moment on a train in India or being totally immersed in a single jewel at a local museum. My eyes are wide open to new discoveries and I love to observe and absorb my surroundings. To me, working with such precious materials is a privilege. Each piece of jewellery should be unique, like each of us, and this is how I like the jewellery to make people feel. I hope to evoke a sense of wonder around the work; a modern British classic of the future, handcrafted and ready to be filled with its own story - throughout our lifetime and generations to come.' - Ruth Tomlinson 2016

Specialist Techniques:

Ruth Tomlinson's collections take on a personal approach and demonstrate sensitivity to the value and history of materials that often contain a secret treasure or history. Precious gemstones in a juxtaposition of unusual cuts sit harmoniously alongside each other resulting in jewellery that has an ethereal beauty – eclectic, intricate, rare and precious. Ruth uses inventive making techniques - through wax casting she is able to seamlessly embed precious gems amongst granules and layers of gold.
